Overview

The M16A1 is the standard-issue US infantry rifle in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — and the first weapon officially confirmed for the game. When Team17 and Expression Games announced their Royal Armouries collaboration in September 2025, the accompanying image was an in-engine render of the M16A1, making it the most confirmed piece of hardware in the game’s arsenal.

The M16A1 is available to most US classes, with the confirmed exceptions being the Machine Gunner and Sniper, who carry specialist weapons. A bayonet attachment is available for eligible classes at higher player levels.

Damage & Effective Range

The M16A1 has its own per-weapon damage curve in the game files (DmgCurve_M16A1). Exact values will be added once the curve data is fully exported. Based on the weapon’s category it performs between the rifle and SMG tiers — high damage at close-to-medium range with a meaningful drop-off at distance.

For reference, the shared Rifle damage curve (used by bolt-action rifles) sits at 110 damage at 0 m dropping to 90 at 200 m and ~46 at max range. The M16A1’s lighter 5.56 round will perform below this ceiling at close range but the full curve will be confirmed once the Vietnam-specific data tables are exported.

Recoil

The M16A1 has a dedicated recoil curve in the game files (crv_recoil_M16_r, crv_recoil_M16_t). Historically lighter recoil than the AK-family Type 56 due to its smaller cartridge — expect the in-game handling to reflect this.

Pros

  • Confirmed by Royal Armouries partnership — authentic look, sound, and animation
  • Versatile across multiple engagement ranges
  • Two fire modes — semi for accuracy, full-auto for close quarters
  • Bayonet option for close-quarters jungle CQB
  • Wide class availability

Cons

  • 20-round magazine vs Type 56’s 30
  • Outclassed by SMGs in extreme close quarters
  • Bayonet requires level progression to unlock

Usage Tips

  • Default to semi-auto at distance, full-auto only in extreme close quarters
  • Burst-fire two-to-three rounds at medium range for recoil control
  • Don’t spray through foliage — Vietnam’s jungle punishes unaimed fire heavily

Comparisons

The M16A1’s NVA counterpart is the Type 56. The Type 56 carries a larger 30-round magazine and hits harder per shot, but has more recoil. The M16A1 is more precise at distance.

  • M203 — underslung grenade launcher variant
  • Rifleman — primary class that carries this weapon
