What is Suppression?
Suppression is a core mechanic of the Hell Let Loose series — the visual and aural effect that incoming fire has on a player, regardless of whether the rounds actually hit. Heavy suppression blurs vision, distorts audio, and degrades aim, simulating the real-world effect of bullets cracking past your head.
In practice: a machine gunner doesn’t have to kill you to neutralise you. Suppression alone keeps you in cover, ruins your shots, and lets your enemy reposition or push.
How It’s Likely to Work
Based on the original Hell Let Loose:
- Rounds passing near your character generate suppression — not just hits
- Suppression accumulates with sustained incoming fire
- Visual effects — vignette darkens, peripheral vision narrows
- Aural effects — sounds become muffled and distorted
- Suppression decays when fire stops
Why It Matters
Suppression is what makes HLL feel different from arcade shooters. It introduces a real cost to standing in the open under fire, even if the enemy isn’t a perfect shot.
For players, this means:
- You can’t out-aim sustained fire — you have to flank or use cover
- MGs are deadly defensive tools even at long range
- Smoke is powerful — denies suppression to the enemy
- Coordinated assaults matter — one squad suppresses while another flanks
How to Survive Suppression
- Break line of sight immediately — even a tree is enough
- Don’t engage from cover that’s already being suppressed — relocate
- Smoke between you and the suppressing weapon
- Wait for the gun to reload — listen for the pause
How to Apply Suppression
- Machine Gunner is the dedicated suppression class
- Riflemen on full-auto can suppress effectively at medium range
- Sustained fire matters more than perfect aim
- Cover your squad’s flank with continuous suppression while they push
