Overview

The Type 54 is the North Vietnamese Army’s standard sidearm in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — a Chinese-manufactured copy of the Soviet TT-33 (Tokarev) pistol. Chambered in 7.62×25mm Tokarev with an eight-round magazine, it is carried by NVA specialist and command roles as a backup weapon for close-quarters emergencies.

Historical Background

The Type 54 is a direct Chinese copy of the Soviet TT-33 Tokarev, produced from the early 1950s onwards and issued widely throughout the NVA and Viet Cong. The Tokarev design was renowned for its high-velocity 7.62×25mm round — faster and with a flatter trajectory than the US .45 ACP, though hitting with slightly less mass.

NVA officers, political officers, and specialist troops carried the Type 54 throughout the Vietnam War. It was a ubiquitous sidearm across all Soviet-aligned forces of the era, and its presence in HLL: Vietnam reflects accurate NVA officer loadout doctrine.

When to Draw It

  • Primary weapon empty in a close contact — no time to reload
  • Moving through tunnels or buildings where rifle length is a liability
  • Your primary is stowed and contact is immediate
  • As a Medic moving to revive with your hands occupied

Stopping powerSlightly lessSlightly more

The Type 54 has a marginally larger magazine and a faster round. The M1911 hits harder per shot. In practice the difference is minimal — both are emergency close-quarters tools, not precision weapons.

Strengths

  • Instantly available as a backup — faster to draw than reloading a primary
  • Eight-round magazine — one more than the M1911
  • Adequate stopping power at close range
  • Light — minimal contribution to loadout weight

Weaknesses

  • Eight rounds limits sustained use
  • Ineffective beyond close range
  • Semi-auto only
  • Not a primary weapon substitute
  • Type 56 — primary rifle for most NVA classes
  • K50M — NVA SMG, an alternative primary for some roles
  • Medic — role where pistol draw is most common during revives
