Overview
The M1911 is the US Armed Forces standard sidearm in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — a .45 ACP semi-automatic pistol with a seven-round magazine. Carried by most US specialist and command roles as a backup weapon, the M1911 is not a primary fighting tool but a last resort for situations where the primary weapon is empty, stowed, or impractical at close range.
Confirmed from audio files in the game’s closed beta build.

Damage & Effective Range
The M1911 uses the shared Pistol damage curve. At point-blank range it deals up to 55 damage — enough to kill in two hits at close quarters. Damage drops steadily beyond 26 m and falls to around 20 damage at 800 m+, making it ineffective at any real distance.
| Range | Damage |
|---|---|
| 0–26 m | 55 |
| 50 m | 50 |
| 100 m | 40 |
| 800 m+ | ~20 |
The .45 ACP subsonic round (253 m/s) has significant drop-off beyond its effective window. This is a weapon for targets within arm’s reach.
Historical Background
The M1911 entered US military service in 1911 and served as the standard US sidearm through both World Wars and into Vietnam. Its .45 ACP round hits hard at close range — reliability and stopping power made it the preferred backup weapon for officers, pilots, and specialist troops throughout the conflict.
By the Vietnam era the M1911 had seen decades of continuous service. US officers and NCOs carried them as a matter of doctrine, and the pistol saw action everywhere from jungle firefights to helicopter cockpits.
When to Draw It
- Primary weapon empty in a close contact — no time to reload
- Moving through a building or tunnel where rifle length is a liability
- Your primary is stowed and contact is immediate
- As a Medic moving to revive with your hands full
Strengths
- Instantly available as a backup — faster to draw than reloading a primary
- 55 damage at close range — two-shot kill potential
- Adequate stopping power for tunnel and CQB scenarios
- Reliable close-quarters option for specialist roles
- Light — does not significantly add to loadout weight
Weaknesses
- Seven-round magazine limits sustained use
- Subsonic round drops off sharply past 50 m
- Wall penetration of 1/5 — stopped by most cover
- Not a primary weapon substitute under any circumstances
Roles That Carry It
Officer, Commander, Medic, Sniper, Spotter, Engineer, and Tank Commander. Specific per-role loadout confirmation will be added after the Vietnam-specific loadout data tables are extracted.
