Overview

The K50M is the North Vietnamese Army’s submachine gun in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — a Vietnamese modification of the Chinese Type 50 (itself a copy of the Soviet PPSh-41), chambered in 7.62×25mm Tokarev. The K50M was the standard weapon of NVA officers, sappers, and urban fighters throughout the Vietnam War, and appears as a confirmed weapon in HLL: Vietnam from audio data in the closed beta.

Historical Background

The K50M was developed in North Vietnam as a modification of the Chinese Type 50, itself derived from the Soviet PPSh-41. Vietnamese armouries shortened the barrel, replaced the drum magazine with a curved stick magazine, added a folding stock, and streamlined the overall design for jungle warfare. The result was a compact, fast-firing SMG well-suited to the close-quarters combat of tunnels, jungle ambushes, and village clearances.

NVA political officers, sappers, and tunnel fighters favoured the K50M for its manoeuvrability in confined spaces — exactly the kind of environments that Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is built around.

Strengths

  • Very high rate of fire — dominant in extreme close quarters
  • 35-round magazine allows sustained short-range fire
  • Compact — ideal for tunnels, buildings, and jungle ambush scenarios
  • Fast to bring to bear at close range

Weaknesses

  • Ineffective beyond short range — bullet drop and spread make it unreliable past 100m
  • Burns through ammunition quickly at full auto
  • No semi-auto option — every trigger pull is a burst
  • Outclassed by rifles at any medium or long range engagement

Best Use Cases

The K50M is a tunnel weapon and an ambush weapon. In Hell Let Loose: Vietnam’s close-quarters environments — tunnel exits, building clearances, dense jungle at contact range — it dominates. The moment the fight moves beyond short range, it becomes a liability.

Use the K50M when you know the fight will be at close range: tunnel exits, building assaults, jungle ambushes. Use the Type 56 when the engagement distance is uncertain — it covers more situations.

Teamwork Notes

NVA roles carrying the K50M are typically closer to the front and operating in tighter terrain. Communicate your position to your Officer — an SMG-armed player needs cover from longer-range threats that they cannot engage reliably themselves.
