Overview
The Type 53 is a Chinese-manufactured copy of the Soviet Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine, carried by NVA specialist roles in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam. Confirmed from audio data in the closed beta build. A compact, bolt-action 7.62×54mmR carbine with a folding bayonet, the Type 53 is a lighter primary option for NVA roles that do not carry the full Type 56 assault rifle.

Historical Background
The Type 53 was China’s licensed copy of the Soviet Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine, produced from 1953 onwards and widely distributed to allied forces including the NVA. Its folding spike bayonet, compact length compared to full-length rifles, and robust reliability made it practical for the NVA’s jungle and tunnel fighting environment.
While NVA frontline infantry primarily carried the Type 56, the Type 53 appeared in the hands of specialists, support troops, tunnel fighters, and irregular forces throughout the conflict. Its bolt-action design meant slower follow-up shots than the Type 56, but its 7.62×54mmR cartridge delivered strong power at the ranges where most jungle fighting occurred.
Folding Bayonet
The Type 53’s folding spike bayonet is permanently attached and folds beneath the barrel when not in use. In close-quarters jungle and tunnel fighting, the bayonet is an immediately available melee option without any weapon change or equip delay.
Bolt-Action in Close Quarters
The Type 53 is bolt-action — each shot requires cycling the bolt before firing again. This is a significant consideration in Vietnam’s close-quarters fighting environments. In jungle ambushes and tunnel exits at very short range, the bolt cycle between shots creates a window where an opponent with a semi-auto or full-auto weapon has a meaningful advantage.
