Overview
The RPD (Ruchnoy Pulemyot Degtyaryova) is the North Vietnamese Army’s light machine gun in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — a Soviet-designed belt-fed 7.62×39mm weapon carried by the NVA Machine Gunner role. Confirmed from audio data in the closed beta build. The RPD provides the NVA with the same sustained suppression capability that the M60 provides to US forces.
Weapon Stats
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Calibre | 7.62×39mm |
| Feed | Belt-fed (drum) |
| Magazine | ~100 rounds per drum |
| Fire mode | Full-auto |
| Effective range | Medium to long |
| Bipod | Yes — deployable prone or on surfaces |
| Reload time | TBA at launch |
Historical Background
The RPD was developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1940s and became the standard light machine gun of Soviet-equipped armies worldwide, including the NVA. It fires the same 7.62×39mm round as the Type 56 and AK family, simplifying ammunition logistics — NVA units carrying RPDs and Type 56s shared the same calibre.
In Vietnam, the RPD was the NVA Machine Gunner’s standard weapon, used extensively for ambushes, defensive positions, and fire support during assaults. Its drum-fed belt system gave it sustained fire capability without the bulk of heavier crew-served weapons, making it ideal for the mobile NVA infantry doctrine.
RPD vs M60 — Faction Comparison
| RPD (NVA) | M60 (US) | |
|---|---|---|
| Calibre | 7.62×39mm | 7.62×51mm NATO |
| Feed | Drum belt | Belt |
| Effective range | Medium to long | Medium to long |
| Weight | Lighter | Heavier |
The RPD fires the same round as the Type 56, while the M60 uses the heavier NATO round. The M60 has marginally more range and hitting power per round; the RPD is lighter and shares ammunition logistics with standard NVA infantry. In-game performance differences will be confirmed after launch.
Bipod Mechanics
The RPD has a deployable bipod functioning identically to the M60 bipod — deploy prone or on suitable surfaces to reduce recoil and maintain accuracy during sustained fire. Immobile when deployed. Use brace fire from the hip for close-range emergencies.
See the Machine Gunner class guide for full bipod and suppression doctrine.
Suppression Role
The RPD’s primary function is suppression, not kills. Sustained fire into US positions forces them into cover, prevents accurate return fire, and creates the window for NVA units to manoeuvre — especially through tunnel exits during coordinated pushes.
Tracers
Like the M60, RPD belts include tracer rounds visible to all players. Tracers help teammates track your fire, but reveal your position immediately. Choose your firing position before engaging — once you open fire, expect return fire.
Strengths
- Sustained suppressive fire — pins US units during NVA pushes and defences
- Shares 7.62×39mm ammunition calibre with Type 56 — consistent logistics
- Lighter than the M60 — less weight impact on loadout
- Bipod deployment for accurate sustained fire
- Effective from ambush positions covering jungle approaches
Weaknesses
- Immobile when bipod is deployed
- Tracers reveal position on firing
- Requires pre-positioning — reactive use is costly
- Dependent on Rifleman ammo resupply during sustained engagements
- High-priority target for US Snipers
