Overview
The M60 is the US Armed Forces’ general-purpose machine gun in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — a belt-fed 7.62×51mm NATO weapon carried by the Machine Gunner role. Confirmed from audio data in the closed beta build. The M60 is the primary suppression tool available to US infantry, capable of pinning entire enemy units and enabling friendly flanks through sustained fire.
Weapon Stats
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Calibre | 7.62×51mm NATO |
| Feed | Belt-fed |
| Magazine | ~100 rounds per belt |
| Fire mode | Full-auto |
| Wall penetration | 3 / 5 |
| Damage class | LMG |
| Bipod | Yes — deployable prone or on surfaces |
Damage & Effective Range
The M60 uses the shared LMG damage curve. At close range it delivers a full 100 damage — a one-shot kill to unarmoured targets. Damage drops to around 65 by 75 m as the heavier 7.62 round loses velocity, then tapers more gradually to ~40 at extreme range. The curve stays higher at distance than SMGs or pistols, reflecting the 7.62 NATO round’s retained energy.
| Range | Damage |
|---|---|
| 0 m | 100 |
| 75 m | 65 |
| 500 m | ~52 |
| 2,600 m (max flight) | ~40 |
The wide effective range and high close-range damage make the M60 genuinely lethal when bipod-deployed — sustained accurate fire is punishing at any combat distance.
Historical Background
The M60 entered US service in 1957 and became synonymous with Vietnam — the image of a US soldier carrying the M60 is one of the defining visual icons of the conflict. Nicknamed “The Pig” by US troops for its weight and appetite for ammunition, the M60 was issued at squad level as a portable heavy fire support weapon.
Bipod Mechanics
The M60 has a deployable bipod. Deploy it prone or on any suitable surface — windowsills, walls, terrain edges — to dramatically reduce recoil and maintain accuracy during sustained fire. When bipod-deployed you are fully immobile. Pick your position before the fight starts and communicate your arc to your unit.
For close-range emergencies, the M60 can be fired from the hip — accuracy drops significantly but it keeps rounds on target when there is no time to deploy.
See the Machine Gunner class guide for full bipod and suppression doctrine.
Suppression Role
The M60’s primary function is not kills — it is suppression. Sustained belt-fed fire into enemy positions forces them to stay in cover, prevents them from shooting accurately, and creates the window your unit needs to advance.
Tracers
M60 belts include tracer rounds that are visible to everyone — friend and foe alike. Tracers help your teammates track where you’re firing, but they also give away your exact position to every enemy on the map. Once you open fire, expect return fire. Be in a position you’ve chosen before pulling the trigger.
Strengths
- 100 damage at point blank — one-shot kill on unarmoured targets
- Sustained belt-fed fire without mid-belt reloads
- Bipod deployment massively improves accuracy at range
- High penetration (3/5) — fires through light cover
- Damage holds well at distance compared to pistols and SMGs
Weaknesses
- Heavy — significant contribution to loadout weight
- Immobile when bipod is deployed
- Tracers reveal your position immediately on firing
- Burns through ammo fast — dependent on Rifleman resupply
