Overview
The IZH-58 is a Soviet-manufactured double-barrel break-action shotgun carried by NVA specialist roles in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — confirmed from audio data in the closed beta build, including dedicated reload sounds. Two barrels, two shells, and at contact range one of the most lethal weapons in the game. The IZH-58 is a pure close-quarters tool that rewards aggressive positioning and punishes any engagement beyond its effective range.

Historical Background
The IZH-58 (Izhevsk Mechanical Plant Model 58) is a Soviet-produced over-under or side-by-side double-barrel shotgun produced from 1958 onwards. While not a military-issued weapon, shotguns including civilian and captured models were used by NVA and Viet Cong forces throughout the conflict — particularly by tunnel fighters, sappers, and ambush specialists who valued their lethality at the extremely short ranges of underground and jungle combat.
In HLL: Vietnam, the IZH-58 reflects the historical reality of NVA forces using whatever effective close-quarters weapons were available — not just Soviet-issue military hardware.
Two Shots, Then Reload
The IZH-58 fires two shells before requiring a break-action reload — both barrels loaded individually. At contact range, two shells is often more than enough. At any meaningful distance, two shells and a slow reload is a severe liability.
When to Use the IZH-58
The IZH-58 has one scenario where it is unmatched: contact range in confined spaces.
Tunnel exits — emerging from a tunnel exit into an unprepared enemy position, the IZH-58’s two barrels clear the immediate area before defenders can respond. No weapon at that range does more damage in two trigger pulls.
Building clearance — entering a room or doorway, the IZH-58’s spread pattern makes a miss at true close range almost impossible. Two shells through a doorway clears the entry point.
Jungle ambush — in the densest terrain where enemies walk to within metres before being detected, the IZH-58 is the correct answer. The spread compensates for the difficulty of precise aim in low-visibility jungle.
Positioning Philosophy
Carrying the IZH-58 changes how you need to play entirely. You are a close-quarters specialist — your positioning must always be in terrain where you will get close-range engagements. Open ground, long sightlines, and any situation requiring fire beyond 30 metres is wrong terrain for this weapon.
Use the NVA tunnel network. Tunnels put you at contact range without crossing open ground. The IZH-58 and the tunnel mechanic are a natural pairing — insert underground, emerge at close range, fire two shells, then switch to a sidearm while you reload.
IZH-58 vs Model 77E
Both are NVA shotguns confirmed in HLL: Vietnam. The IZH-58 is a double-barrel break-action; the Model 77E is a pump-action with a higher capacity. The IZH-58 offers two faster initial shots with a slower reload; the Model 77E trades the immediate two-barrel discharge for more shells before reloading.
| IZH-58 | Model 77E | |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Double-barrel break | Pump-action |
| Initial shots | 2 (both barrels) | Multiple |
| Reload speed | Slower (break-action) | Faster per shell |
| Best use | Instant two-barrel discharge | Sustained close engagement |
Strengths
- Devastating at contact range — two shells simultaneously
- Spread pattern minimises miss chance at close quarters
- Ideal for tunnel exits and building clearances
- Compact and light
- First two shots are faster than any pump-action equivalent
Weaknesses
- Two shots before a slow break-action reload
- Completely ineffective beyond short range
- Reload leaves you vulnerable — requires cover immediately after firing
- No suppression capability
- Dependent entirely on closing the distance before engaging
