Overview
Patrol boats are a confirmed new vehicle type in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — available to both factions for combat and transport along the maps’ river networks. Unlike helicopters (US-only) and tunnels (NVA-only), boats are symmetric: both sides can hunt and ambush on the water.
Confirmed Capabilities
- Heavily armed patrol boats — mounted weapons confirmed
- River-based engagement — hunt enemy boats and ambush riverside positions
- Transport capability — move squads along waterways
- Includes PBR-style craft with mounted weapons (per early dev material)
Tactical Implications
Rivers in HLL: Vietnam stop being terrain obstacles and start being combat zones in their own right. This changes map design and squad positioning:
- Riverbanks become contested ground — squads near water are exposed to boat fire
- Bridges become high-value crossings — naturally defensible by armed boats
- Mobility advantage along waterways
- Vulnerability — boats are exposed and easy targets for AT and MGs
How to Use Patrol Boats
- Travel with another boat for mutual support
- Don’t loiter near contested banks — strike and move
- Use mounted weapons for area suppression
- Coordinate with ground squads — boats deliver, ground holds
How to Counter Patrol Boats
- Position MGs and AT to cover river approaches
- Set up ambushes at narrow river chokepoints
- Don’t engage from open ground near water unless you have to
- Air assets (US) can engage boats from above
