Helicopter Gunner

Role Overview

The Helicopter Gunner is the third crew role in the US Helicopter unit — operating the M60D door-mounted machine guns on the UH-1 Huey during troop insertions, extractions, and dedicated fire support runs. Where the Pilot keeps the aircraft flying and the Logistics Officer manages payloads and ground coordination, the Gunner’s sole focus is the door gun and the ground below.

The Door Gun — M60D

The M60D is the door-mounted variant of the ground M60 machine gun, firing the same 7.62×51mm NATO round. At 400 rounds per belt plus a spare, the Gunner has sustained fire capability for multiple engagement runs before needing to return to base to rearm.

The gun provides:

• Suppressive fire during insertions — clearing the LZ approach as the Pilot comes in
• Direct fire support during dedicated gun runs on enemy positions
• Covering fire during extractions — keeping enemy heads down while the squad boards

When to Engage

LZ approach suppression — as the Pilot makes the approach to a landing zone, the Gunner fires on likely enemy positions along the approach route. The goal is to keep enemy heads down during the most vulnerable phase of the insertion — when the helicopter is committed to its approach and cannot easily evade.

Dedicated fire support runs — coordinated with ground squads requesting air support. The Pilot positions the helicopter for a run across the target area; the Gunner fires on the marked position. Communicate clearly with the Logistics Officer who is relaying ground requests.

Extraction cover — during extraction of a squad under pressure, the Gunner fires on enemy positions to suppress return fire while the squad boards. These are often the most time-critical engagements.

Protecting the Aircraft

The Gunner’s fire is also the helicopter’s primary self-defence against ground threats. NVA AA positions, heavy machine guns, and anti-aircraft infantry are all threats to the Huey. While the Pilot is responsible for routing away from known AA, the Gunner can engage:

• NVA Anti-Aircraft emplacements — suppress before and during approach
• DShKM positions — the NVA’s primary heavy AA weapon; suppress before the Pilot enters its effective range
• Ground infantry threatening the LZ — clear the immediate LZ area before the Pilot commits to landing

Strengths

• 400 rounds per gun plus spare belt — sustained suppressive capability
• Protects the LZ approach for both insertions and extractions
• Direct fire support for ground squads from altitude
• Can engage NVA AA positions before they threaten the aircraft
• In-air spawning means continuous aerial operations without landing

Weaknesses

• Tracers reveal helicopter position on sustained fire
• Limited traverse — the door gun has a fixed arc; the Pilot must position the helicopter to bring targets into the arc
• Dependent on Pilot positioning — a poor approach angle means the target is out of the gun’s reach
• 400 rounds finite — extended operations require returning to base to rearm

Teamwork Tips

• Stay in constant communication with the Logistics Officer — they relay ground requests and threat positions
• Call your ammo status clearly: the Pilot needs to know if you’re running low before committing to another run
• Announce when you’re reloading — there will be a brief window where the gun is dry
• Coordinate which side each Gunner covers on the approach if both doors are manned
• After each engagement, call the result back to the Logistics Officer so they can relay it to the ground squad
