The Helicopter Unit — Three Roles

The Helicopter unit has three confirmed crew roles, all US-exclusive:

  • Pilot — flies the aircraft. Routes, LZ selection, and keeping the helicopter alive
  • Logistics Officer — manages supply payloads, coordinates drop-off points, and operates door-gun fire
  • Gunner — operates the M60D door guns (400 rounds + 1 spare belt per side)

All three roles are required to run a fully effective helicopter. A two-person crew can operate but leaves either a door gun unmanned or the logistics function unmanaged.

Role Overview

The Pilot is one of the most significant additions to Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — the first controllable aerial unit in the franchise. US forces only. Pilots fly helicopters for fire support, troop transport, supply runs, and medical evacuation.

Helicopters define the asymmetric US advantage in the game’s setting: where the NVA tunnels through the earth, the US flies over it.

Strengths

  • Aerial mobility — fastest deployment in the game
  • Massive transport capacity for an entire squad
  • Fire support platform on armed helicopters
  • Resupply via supply drops

Weaknesses

  • High-value target — AA, MGs, and small arms threaten you
  • Mechanic intensive — flying is a real skill
  • Catastrophic losses — a downed helo kills the whole crew + cargo
  • Map terrain dictates safe approach corridors

Best Playstyle

The pilot’s role is routes and timing. Identify safe ingress and egress corridors. Time your drops to coincide with squad pushes. Never linger over enemy positions — your job is delivery, not loitering.

Communicate constantly with the Logistics Officer in your aircraft and the squads you’re transporting.

Teamwork Tips

  • Confirm LZs before approach — don’t drop into hot zones blind
  • Stay low and follow terrain; altitude is a death sentence near AA
  • Coordinate with the Commander — they know which squads need transport
  • Practise landings on solo runs before live combat

Pilot kit is minimal — your weapon is the helicopter. Expect:

  • Sidearm only
  • Possibly a survival carbine for crash scenarios

Advanced Tactics

  • Nap-of-the-earth flying: hug terrain, valleys, and tree lines to stay below AA threat
  • Hot extraction: faster than slow infantry retreat under pressure
  • Decoy flights: drawing AA fire so another helo can deliver real cargo
