Overview
The DShKM (Degtyaryova-Shpagina Krupnokaliberny, modernised) is the North Vietnamese Army’s 12.7mm heavy machine gun in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — the NVA’s primary heavy anti-aircraft and anti-vehicle weapon. Confirmed from audio data in the closed beta build. The DShKM is historically significant as one of the primary weapons responsible for NVA air defence throughout the Vietnam War.

Historical Background
The DShK (and its modernised DShKM variant) was the standard Soviet-supplied heavy machine gun used by NVA forces throughout the Vietnam War. It became one of the most feared weapons US aviators faced — NVA and Viet Cong units positioned DShKMs on the approaches to high-value targets, river crossings, and along likely helicopter flight corridors.
US helicopter losses to DShKM fire were significant throughout the conflict. The weapon’s 12.7mm round could bring down a UH-1 Huey with a handful of hits, and its effective anti-aircraft range of up to 1,500 metres meant helicopters had to fly well above effective support altitude or risk being engaged.
In HLL: Vietnam, the DShKM is the NVA’s dedicated heavy anti-air and anti-vehicle platform — the direct structural equivalent of the US M2HB.
Anti-Air Role — Primary Function
The DShKM is the most powerful anti-aircraft weapon available to the NVA in HLL: Vietnam. Combined with the dedicated Anti-Aircraft role, a DShKM emplacement covering likely helicopter flight corridors is a genuine threat to US aerial operations.
DShKM vs M2HB — Faction Comparison
| DShKM (NVA) | M2HB (US) | |
|---|---|---|
| Calibre | 12.7×108mm Soviet | .50 BMG (12.7×99mm) |
| Primary role | Anti-aircraft | Anti-vehicle / anti-infantry |
| Belt size | 50 rounds | 105 rounds |
| Effective range | Long | Long |
Both weapons are 12.7mm heavy machine guns with comparable capability. The DShKM’s historical focus on anti-aircraft work in Vietnam reflects the NVA’s primary use case in the game — countering US helicopter dominance.
Anti-Vehicle Role
The DShKM’s 12.7mm round defeats the armour of patrol boats and light vehicles. Positioned to cover a river approach, it is a serious deterrent to US patrol boat operations. Against the M48 Patton, the DShKM will engage tracks, optics, and external equipment rather than defeating main armour.
Emplacement
Like the M2HB, the DShKM must be emplaced before firing and is stationary once set up. Choose your arc carefully — covering flight corridors and river approaches simultaneously is the ideal position where terrain allows.
Strengths
- Primary anti-aircraft capability — most effective NVA counter to the UH-1 Huey
- 12.7mm round devastates infantry, light vehicles, and patrol boats
- Long effective range — engages targets well beyond rifle distance
- Historically accurate to NVA air defence doctrine
- Forces US pilots to altitude even without direct hits
Weaknesses
- Requires emplacement — stationary once set up
- Repositioning requires full teardown and rebuild
- High-priority US target — expect counter-fire once identified
- Limited belt size compared to the M2HB
- Cannot penetrate M48 Patton main armour
