Overview
The Type 67 is the North Vietnamese Army’s standard hand grenade in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — a Chinese-manufactured stick grenade with a fragmentation warhead. Confirmed from audio data in the closed beta build including distinct priming sounds. The Type 67 is the NVA’s thrown explosive for clearing covered positions, disrupting enemy pushes, and supporting close-quarters tunnel ambushes.

Historical Background
The Type 67 is a Chinese-developed stick grenade — the fragmentation successor to earlier wooden-handled designs used by Chinese and NVA forces. Its stick handle allowed a longer throw than western-style egg grenades, and its fragmentation sleeve produced a lethal blast radius in the open.
NVA and Viet Cong forces used grenades extensively in Vietnam — in tunnel ambushes, during bunker clearances, and to break up US infantry assaults. The stick grenade’s longer throwing handle made it particularly practical in the cramped vegetation of the jungle, where a full overarm throw with a round grenade was often difficult.
Tactical Use
Clearing covered positions — throw into a building room, bunker entrance, or behind cover where enemies are sheltering. The fragmentation radius damages soldiers that direct fire cannot reach.
Disrupting pushes — a grenade thrown into an advancing enemy formation forces them to disperse or go to ground, buying time for your unit to reposition or reinforce.
Tunnel exit ambushes — emerging from a tunnel exit with a grenade throw into the likely enemy position clears the immediate area before your unit moves through. Coordinate timing with your unit before emerging.
Breaking up MG positions — a grenade into a bipod-deployed Machine Gunner’s position forces them to abandon their emplacement even if it doesn’t score a direct kill.
Overarm vs Underarm
Throw technique matters at different ranges:
- Overarm — maximum distance throw, suitable for long bomb into a position
- Underarm — lower trajectory, suitable for rolling under cover or into a doorway
Strengths
- Clears covered positions that direct fire cannot reach
- Area effect — damages multiple enemies within the blast radius
- Disrupts enemy formations and emplaced weapons
- Stick handle aids throwing distance and accuracy
- Essential for tunnel exit ambushes and building clearances
Weaknesses
- Short range — hand-thrown distance only
- Fuse time creates a window for the enemy to respond
- Limited carry — weight system constrains how many can be carried
- Ineffective against armour
- Friendly fire risk in close-quarters environments — communicate before throwing
