Overview
The M2 Flamethrower is a portable US incendiary weapon in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — confirmed from audio data in the closed beta build including distinct firing sounds. The M2 projects a stream of ignited fuel at close range, devastating against infantry in cover, bunker complexes, and dense jungle positions where conventional weapons struggle to clear defenders.

Historical Background
The M2 Flamethrower was the standard US portable flamethrower in Vietnam, used primarily for clearing bunker complexes, caves, and fortified jungle positions. US forces deployed flamethrowers throughout the conflict against NVA and Viet Cong underground positions where conventional weapons were ineffective.
In the confined spaces of jungle warfare and fortified positions, the flamethrower’s ignited fuel stream cleared defenders that direct rifle fire could not reach. The psychological impact was equally significant — the sound and sight of a flamethrower in operation was uniquely terrifying.
Tactical Use
Bunker and fortified position clearance — the flamethrower’s primary role. Stream ignited fuel into bunker openings and fortified positions to clear defenders that rifle fire cannot reach.
Dense jungle clearance — fire into vegetation where NVA troops are sheltering. The burning effect reaches through cover that blocks bullets.
NVA tunnel complex denial — a flamethrower projected into a tunnel entrance denies the position and can collapse the immediate area around the exit.
Building clearance — stream through doorways and windows to clear rooms without entering them.
Vulnerability
The flamethrower’s fuel tank is carried on the operator’s back. A hit to the fuel tank can cause catastrophic detonation. This makes the flamethrower carrier a high-priority target for enemy infantry, and means exposure to fire while closing to range is extremely dangerous.
Move in cover. Use smoke. Have infantry protecting you. The flamethrower wins every close engagement — but it has to survive long enough to get there.
Strengths
- Devastating against infantry in cover — clears positions rifles cannot
- Burning damage continues after the initial stream
- Extremely effective in jungle, bunker, and tunnel denial scenarios
- Unique capability — no other weapon replicates what a flamethrower does in tight terrain
- Psychological effect on enemy positioning
Weaknesses
- Very short range — must close distance under fire
- Fuel tank vulnerability — catastrophic if hit
- Carrier is a high-priority enemy target
- Useless in open terrain or at any meaningful range
- Heavy loadout contribution from fuel tanks
